Dr. Stephen M. Sammut has been engaged with I4H since its founding and has played an active role in publications and research. His principal professional activity is with Alta Semper Capital, an impact private equity firm focused on health care-related investing on the African continent. It has a wide range of businesses in patient care services, pharmaceutical retailing, and other businesses that support African health care. He has worked as a health care entrepreneur and investor since the 1970s founding or investing in nearly 50 health-oriented companies globally.
Stephen also pursues academic activity as a Senior Fellow in Health Care Management and a Lecturer in Entrepreneurship at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where he has taught over 14, 000 students during the last 30 years. His courses include Private Equity in Emerging Markets, Health Care Entrepreneurship, and the Role of the Private Sector in Global Health. His health-related management education contributions include the design and delivery of the health care management MBA and executive programs at the Indian School of Business, as well as the health care management program at Strathmore University in Nairobi. He is currently supporting the launch of similar programs at the Lagos Business School and the KNUST Business School in Ghana.
To support African health management excellence, he co-founded the African Institute for Health Care Management. His research and publications focus on international development with a special focus on capacity building in health care and biopharmaceutical production in emerging economies. He has also done extensive work on the implementation of precision medicine in the developing world.
He holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in life sciences and humanities from Villanova University, studied medical science and epidemiology at the Hahnemann Medical College. He has an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorate in Business Administration from the Fox School of Business at Temple University. He has also holds certificates in Implementation Research at the WHO, Innovation in Global Health at IESE, Precision Medicine at Harvard Business School, Fintech at the Said School of the University of Oxford, and Quantum Computing at MIT.
